Newborn Safety Measures

Newborn safety measures are methods that newborn photographers practice to keep their work process simple and safe for the baby. And this is different from photographer to photographer depending on their experience, their work process, their skills and their knowledge about newborn baby.

Let’s try to understand.

For one to gain knowledge, he can pursue an education or a course to help him understand the basic fundamentals of a subject. And courses are available for different levels. However, we must not forget that that one can also gain knowledge through research and reading with the availability of online resources today. But these does not translate into skills until the actual practice where it accumulate one’s experience.

Skill is the ability to perform a task, depending on its difficulties, advance skills maybe needed. In the most basic work for newborn photography, it require one to be able to operate the camera and handle a newborn baby. For advance work which involves the use of props, fabrics and backdrop, it requires advance skill to handle a baby and position the baby comfortably. Finally, up to the expertise level, a seasoned photographer creates his own work and his own props.

We gained experience facing various situations and encounters which deepen our ability to cope and manage. These situations could be similar or they could be new if we have just started in a new industry or job. Gaining experience is an attitude, it is about keeping an open mind to learn, observe and apply what works for you. Take for instance, we usually work without assistant thus our workflow is different from someone who prefer an assistant. So, there isn’t a right or wrong in such situation. However, with adequate knowledge, one must constantly review his workflow to adjust to unforeseen circumstances.

Given thoughts, how can we be sure that our assistant will be the same in the next few years? And how is it wrong for parents to be involved in their own photo session? If it is already wrong, we will have gone back to traditions when your baby is taken right away from you after your delivery. Isn’t this contradicting?

We are already in a knowledge driven society where information is at our fingertips, and there are even classes to impart basic skills needed to care for newborn baby. And it is really about adjusting and applying what is most suitable for your family. Time as a quantifiable value is equal for everyone, but it isn’t depending on individual’s commitments, likewise our physique and mental capacity.

Singapore Newborn Photographer | Little Akito from Japan

Singapore Newborn Photographer

As a Singapore newborn photographer for the last 9 years, the most memorable experiences still come from cultural exchange. Yes, I meant it, it is an interesting thing to learnt from one another and sometimes these exchange helps to build a harmonious society which is very important for the future generation.

So here is my story with Little Akito and his family.

When I first arrived at their place, I was overwhelmed by their hospitality because Maki-san came down personally to get me, so you can imagine how I felt. And when I reached their residence, I was totally awe because it is really very well kept and clean. I know this may sound normal but if you agree with me, a family who just had a newborn baby at home, you will probably have things here and there. My home is probably a disaster in comparison, with my props everywhere!

As I begin to unpack my stuffs for the setup, their family render a lot of help which makes my life so easy! And the best part, they have everyone seated for my session chat. It is something that I started practicing since 2011. The purpose of having a session chat is to help clients understand how the process flow for our newborn photography session. In addition, I usually take this chance to reiterate how newborn babies are handled which is adapt from the parent craft course. I always believe that it is good to maintain some standard practices which is common and useful for parents.

Our newborn session with Little Akito was really smooth, because he just dozed off after nursing. And we had a little bit more surprised when we were rounding up the session with a few more family photographs. This is when we saw him smile in his daddy’s arm!

We ended the photo session with Little Akito smiling!

Ending the session with a baby smiling in his daddy arm really makes my day, but seeing the delight on their faces give me a personal satisfaction. While I was leaving their residence, we were all bowing non-stop and I was totally immersed by this polite culture!

If you are following my Instagram, you will probably know that I brought my younger daughter during delivery and she got a Hello Kitty Sanrio envelope that she kept like some treasure in her secret shelf!

Cute Newborn Photography

Little Greg made an amazing debut with us on our latest airplane which was built over a week. We were fortunate to be their newborn photographer because our in-house project was spotted over Instagram – they are not the usual cute props that you see!

The actual story goes like this, it was over Christmas when we received a call for their booking. We were then in the midst of creating a new prop for newborn sessions. With slightly more than 48 hours towards the actual day of the photo session, we rush to get the airplane in colors and packed it with bubble wraps. For those of you who don’t know, spray paint needs a minimum of 7 days to dry properly.

Fortunately, things turn out well on the actual day when we arrived at their place. Somehow, our customer also like the airplane prop which we prepared for her little boy. And she knew it was a plane because of a small propeller that we posted on Instagram.

It is really heartfelt to have families who appreciate the efforts that we made and this keep us going!

Herewith, my biggest thanks to this family for their invited lunch ~ one of the best meals and a trip back home! Thank you for trusting us as well.

She’s the little one who smile twice during her newborn session and her baby shower. It is a pleasure to be their photographer because I get to capture her smile two times when she was a newborn.

But that’s not all, she had another smiley shot with her paw paw friend!

For newborn baby, smiling is not something that is predictable however there’s tell tale signs before they smile. And this is Illia – well fed and satisfied!

Newborn sessions are very different as compared to the daily care that is needed, because baby are taken out of their comfortable swaddle and dress in baby costume. Usually if they don’t make a fuss, it is still possible to continue with the photo session. However it will be impossible, if you are expecting baby to be wide open and cooperating.

Little Sage smile through her newborn photography session following Little Zach’s photo shoot.

And it is really pleasing because it is so hard to have newborn baby who smile naturally for a few times during the photo session. Although our session looks lengthy with a 5 hours duration, it is the best for newborn because we need that constant breaks to ensure they are given the maximum comfort during the photography session.

Newborn photography is taken between the 5th to 10th days period because their looks doesn’t last more than two weeks. Most families who have missed the newborn session for their first child, know how precious it is!

The second reason why we take newborn during this period is because they usually follow a routine of going to sleep after being fed.

Last but not all, sleeping baby always look sweet!

Thankful that the session works well, and we have received a honest feedback from Little Sage’s parents!

Newborn Photography Prop

Newborn Photography Prop

I never thought I could put an old prop in use given it has been collecting dust at my home for the last 5 years. This used to be a prop which we used for kids and babies but we decided to give it a go when mother Stephanie ask if we have any props related to music given it is her profession. But what goes behind is much more endearing because this is not simple at all for newborn babies. On the difficulty scale, this is probably the hardest that I have done! And it is on an exceptional case that we are doing it for a mother’s love.

For little Zach, this is his second session with us, as the first one didn’t really work out well. Sometimes newborn babies can just be as fussy if they are still hungry even though their stomach is probably just the size of a peanut!

For us, we never carry on sessions if babies are fussy. Our priority in newborn sessions is about the baby’s comfort. After all, it is the joy that we are capturing for your family!

So let’s go look at little Zach fleeting moments!

Natural Light Newborn Photography with Tan Family

Natural Light Newborn Photography

It was absolutely cheerful when I first stepped into the Tan’s family home. The environment was filled with very good natural light and more importantly there was this little tinkle star who was giggling when I arrived at their place. It bring a lot of heartiness even when I was doing the retouch work on the images that we did for them. I think environment with good light is one thing, and the more obvious reason behind why this session works really well was because they were a very cheerful and positive family.

It can be very hard most of the time when we first met, hardly knew each other and there’s probably a little gap between us and your family. So we prefer not to start on dot, as this definitely build up anxiety and stress. That explains why our photography session are easily half a day long keeping it comfortable for your baby and your family.

There’s a lot of advantages when it comes to home photography session, although there will still be challenges. Some of it are listed below for considerations:

  1. Your home got most of the things you would need. Less preparations needed, no headaches of thinking about this or that, just keep positive!
  2. No need to race with time, less worries and anxiety means you would look more comfortable and natural.
  3. With kids around, staying at home means lesser distractions. Getting your attention is definitely minimized!
  4. Ample time to feed baby and allow rests in between for us to have breaks as well.
  5. The natural comfort of being at home – you know how it feels when you reached back home!

Our Top 10 Newborn Photographs

newborn photographers

It is one of the toughest job being newborn photographers. And you need a little stroke of luck in photography to get a good shot, and sometimes a single piece of work may just take too much time and attempts to get that perfect looking shot for a baby who is barely a week old.

So we often balance between aesthetic results against time spent for a single shot. This gave us sufficient time to have family photographs – a must do because it is a complete thing for a family!

Over the last 7 years, we handled over a hundred of newborn babies including premature babies as small as 2kg. And the biggest newborn we ever handled is around 4kg, probably a heavy weigh champion. The toughest of the two is actually the bigger baby because handling a 4kg is really no easy feat. And this is also the reason why we often ask about the baby weight so we can plan our session with the right props.

With this in mind, you can be assured that your session will turn out great with those beautiful images of your newborn baby!

Photographing newborn the easy way

Photographing newborn

Photographing newborn the easy way

One of the most challenging issue in newborn photography session is how we get your baby to be asleep when we are photographing them. It is always seen as an easy task by most families during the first week because your baby seems to be sound asleep after you fed them. However, that’s not really true because your baby start getting awake after you remove their swaddle. This is really because newborn babies aren’t able to maintain their body temperature during the first few weeks. So it is normal that they become fussy and uncomfortable!

Meet little Giselle who is just a few days old when we photograph her! We caught her smiling at least twice during the photography session.

If you like a newborn photography session that works for you, consider working with us during the 5th to 8th day period. Our session is inclusive of a chat to help you understand how we conduct our sessions. Speak to us to understand more.

Have a good weekend!

Newborn and Family Photography | Keeping it Simple

Family Photography

Alot of calls kept coming and most questions were asking if you could do Newborn Photography if your baby has passed that golden week – 5th to 10th day period. The short answer is yes but here’s one good reason why families do it during the first two weeks!

It is normal that babies start to come awake more often for milk, and diaper changing from the second week. And from the third week onward, they will sometimes stay awake being adjusted to daytime, or probably asleep but conscious of the environment due to the day light. For some babies, this could be much faster depending on their development.

For newborn photography to work well, it is ideal to do it between the 5th to 10th day term because they are much more ‘curly’ and they get into sleep so quickly after their milk which brings a lot of differences in the images that are produced.

This is also the reason why we have our current promotion to adapt the third week to keep things simple for your baby, have a little head start and most importantly those newborn features that doesn’t last beyond the third week!

We have been doing newborn photography for the last five years with a lot of attention spend on handling your baby and ensuring our sessions are done in a comfortable manner that is suitable for you and your families. Our sessions all begin with a little chat to help you understand how we handle your baby and how some of the images are done even before we begin!
